Why this math calculator is different
01
It knows what you mean
Type the problem the way you would write it. `d/dx`, an `=` sign, a list of numbers or a shape with its measurements is enough to choose the method.
02
Steps for everything, free
Equations, calculus, fractions, statistics, matrices and geometry come with every step named and explained — no paywall on the working.
03
Checked, not guessed
Engine answers are verified independently — by substitution, a second method or a numerical check — before they get the Verified stamp.
What is this math calculator?
This math calculator is one box for every kind of maths problem. Most online calculators make you find the right page first; here you type the problem, it recognises the kind of problem — an equation, a system, a derivative, a fraction sum, a data set, a triangle — and hands it to the dedicated solver for that topic.
Every solver shows its working: the rule used at each step, a short reason why, a graph where it helps, and practice problems built from yours. Answers are checked by an independent method before they are marked Verified — for an equation, by substituting the solutions back in.
Prefer to go straight to a topic? The directory below lists every maths tool on the site. Search it by name, or paste a problem and it opens the right page for you.
How to use the math calculator
- 1Type your problem in the box. Use `^` for powers, `sqrt()` for roots and `/` for fractions — `2x` and `x(x+1)` are fine.
- 2Add a command word if it helps: `factor x^2 - 9`, `simplify (x^2-1)/(x-1)`, `d/dx sin(x^2)`. Separate several equations with commas.
- 3Press Enter or Solve. The answer card says which kind of problem it detected, then shows the steps.
- 4Use the Graph and Table tabs where they appear.
- 5For a matrix grid or a long-division frame, open that calculator below.
What the math calculator recognises
A few patterns tell it which solver to use:
Equations and systems
One `=` is solved for its variable; quadratics get factorising and the quadratic formula. Two or more equations separated by commas are solved as a system.
Derivatives, integrals and limits
Start with `d/dx`, `integrate … dx` or `lim x->0`. Every step names the rule — product, chain, by parts — and the answer is checked numerically.
Fractions, inequalities and factorising
Plain numbers with `/` become exact fractions; `<` or `>=` gives an inequality as an interval; `factor` factorises a polynomial.
Statistics, matrices and geometry
A list of numbers gives the mean, median and standard deviation; `det [[2,1],[1,3]]` works on a matrix; `area of a circle with radius 7 cm` goes to the geometry solver.
Word problems and photos
A story with numbers needs reading, not just calculating, so it goes to the AI word problem solver, labelled as AI. Photos go to the photo maths solver.
Math calculator worked example: x² − 5x + 6 = 0
- 01
The calculator sees an equation in x whose highest power is 2, so it uses the quadratic solver.
- 02
Look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to -5: they are -2 and -3.
x^2 - 5x + 6 = (x - 2)(x - 3) - 03
A product is zero only when one of its factors is zero.
x = 2 or x = 3 - 04
Check by substituting each root back into the original equation.
2^2 - 5(2) + 6 = 0 checkmark
Typing tips (and common slips)
Fractions need brackets
`1/x+1` means 1/x + 1. If you mean (1)/(x+1), type `1/(x+1)`. The live preview shows how your input was read.
`log` versus `ln`
`log` means base 10 and `ln` means the natural log (base e). Use `log_2(x)` for other bases.
Powers of negative numbers
`-3^2` is -9, because the power is done before the minus sign. For (-3)^2 = 9, type `(-3)^2`.
Math calculator FAQ
Is this math calculator free?+
Yes. Every calculator on the site — equations, calculus, fractions, statistics, matrices, geometry — runs on our own maths engine and is free to use as often as you like, with full steps and no sign-up. Only AI features such as photo solving have a daily free allowance.
Does it show working, or just answers?+
Working. Each step names the rule it uses and says why, in the order a teacher would write it. Read the steps all at once, or switch to one step at a time and try each line yourself before revealing it.
How does it know which calculator to use?+
It looks at the shape of what you typed: `d/dx` means a derivative, `=` means an equation (two or more make a system), a list of numbers means statistics, a shape with measurements means geometry, and words like factor or simplify choose that task.
Is it a scientific calculator?+
It does everything a scientific calculator does for school maths — powers, roots, trigonometry, logarithms and fractions — and goes further: it solves equations, keeps answers exact (such as √(2) or 5/4), draws graphs and explains each step in words.
Can I type maths notation from my textbook?+
Yes. Implicit multiplication (`2x`, `3(x+1)`), `sin x`, `sqrt(2)`, `pi`, `e^x`, `|x|`, `≤`, `²` and `√` are understood. The live preview under the box shows the typeset version as you type, so you can spot a missing bracket before you solve.
Can it read a photo or a word problem?+
Use the photo maths solver to snap or paste a question, and the word problem solver for questions written in sentences. Those are read by AI and you confirm the problem first. If AI help is unavailable, typed problems here still work.
How do I find a specific calculator?+
Use the searchable directory on this page — type a name like "matrix" or a task like "standard deviation" — or press ⌘K / Ctrl+K anywhere. Paste a whole problem and it offers to open the right calculator with it filled in.
